Sturt Reserve on the Riverfront of Murray Bridge is a special place.

A mecca for outdoor pleasure and fun for all.

The redevelopment of the riverfront at Murray Bridge will see Sturt Reserve transform, become a centre of activity and a powerful source for community pride.  The works proposed will set the scene for the significant transformation of Murray Bridge and establish it as a destination of choice to live, work, invest, do business, study and holiday.

The riverfront in Murray Bridge is being transformed into a regional showpiece and world class leisure destination.

The vibrant summer playground of Sturt Reserve is looking better than ever as the first phase of a long term multimillion dollar redevelopment project enlivens the space, bringing new energy and inspiring a strong sense of community pride and joy.

Impressive new infrastructure includes the Murray Bridge War Memorial, Murray Bridge Regional Rowing Centre, Murray Cods Memorial, Sturt Reserve Trail Head, sections of the Murray Coorong Trail, a floating pontoon, landscaping and improved lighting.

Wide shared paths meandering through the trees and along the riverfront call dog walkers, cyclists and families from far and wide to meet and explore the parkland – creating accessibility and connection between the river and the heart of our Rural City.

The vision unfolding is the first instalment of a $34 million Riverfront Redevelopment Plan to enhance and showcase the premier Murray River playground in South Australia.

Significant progress has been made in bringing the Recreation Precinct to life - the first of four key areas earmarked for development.

The next stage of the long term Sturt Reserve Master Plan will focus on the Heritage Precinct.

This Rural City of Murray Bridge project is being made possible in partnership with the State and Federal Governments, through the Building Better Regions Fund.

PLANNING FOR THRIVING COMMUNITIES

Redevelopment of the riverfront sets the scene for the significant transformation of Murray Bridge and the establishment of the regional centre as a destination of choice to live, work, invest, do business study and holiday.

The story begins with consultation with our community on its desired future and the development of the Rural City of Murray Bridge Community Plan.

The  Rural City of Murray Bridge Community Plan 2016-2032 articulates the community’s clear aspiration to have stronger connections with the river and forms the basis for continued planning for the revitalisation of our riverfront.

In response to the community's aspirations the Murray Bridge Riverfront Strategy was commissioned.

The Strategy identifies opportunities for the rejuvenation along the Murray River corridor, encompassing the future potential for residential land uses, recreational uses and sustainable environmental management. The Strategy recommends that Sturt Reserve be the focal point for riverfront investment and that the reserve is considered as a number of precincts based on existing infrastructure and the expressed future desires of the community.

The Precincts defined in the Strategy are Play, Recreation, History and Tourism and Accommodation.

The Sturt Reserve Masterplan (November 2017) responds to the Riverfront Strategy, taking the Sturt Reserve Precinct Plan to the next level.  It provides sound direction for future upgrades and development of Sturt Reserve including:

  • the guiding principles to transform Sturt Reserve into a thriving community hub with improved access and connections, recreation nodes whilst observing environmental best practices;
  • a framework for future, more detailed project implementation plans; and,
  • a basis for planning, funding and further design development, providing.

The direction found in the Sturt Reserve Master Plan Design Development 2021 guides the next stage of engagement, detailed design and delivery for the long term.

The document outlines the vision for Sturt Reserve and provides direction for Council and the community in relation to next steps. Important guidance is provided for history and tourism infrastructure, interpretive information, connectivity to the CBD and public art.  The report also examines requirements for effective vehicle movement and management at the site.

Council  is committed to moving forward turning these plans into reality.  Follow our journey, completed works, works in progress and looking into the future will be presented on this site.
