During the Fire Danger Season, restrictions are placed on lighting fires to reduce the chance of large fires starting.
These restrictions are escalated when a Total Fire Ban Day is declared.
Restrictions on fires under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005 will apply throughout South Australia on the dates declared by the CFS Chief Officer.
Fire Prevention
Fire prevention starts with you - our community. We would like to provide you with the knowledge to implement safety measures to protect your family, animals and property.
Under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005,(FESA) Council has an obligation to undertake Fire Prevention measures within its area.
Council is guided by the Murray Mallee Bushfire Management Committee (MMBMC). The MMBMC is part of the new two tiered approach, with the State Bushfire Coordination Committee (SBCC) having the legislative responsibility for bushfire management planning in South Australia. Bushfire Management Area Plans will replace the old District Bushfire Prevention Plans.
Each year during the months of October and November, depending on seasonal conditions, properties are assessed for compliance against the Fire and Emergency Services Act and Regulations. If a property needs attention, a notice will be issued giving the property owner direction on the requirements. If this notice is not complied with, Council may issue Expiation under the FESA and slash the allotment and/or arrange for a contractor to carry out the work, with the owner being on-charged any associated costs.
Landholders are asked to keep their property clean and free from fire hazards at all times of the year particularly during the fire danger season. Please remember that bushfire prevention is an obligation, not an option.
Council requires that all properties comply with the following:
- If your property is under 2 hectares, it is required to have grass and undergrowth reduced to a maximum height of 100 mm by the start of the Fire Danger Season.
- If your property is over 2 hectares, a 5 metre fire break is to be established as close as possible to the boundary of the property at the beginning of the Fire Danger Season.

THE RURAL CITY OF MURRAY BRIDGE IS WITHIN THE MURRAYLANDS FIRE BAN DISTRICT
Rural City of Murray Bridge Council Domestic Burning Permits and CFS Schedule 9 and 10 Permits can be issued after an application process.
On completion of the application, Council Officers will inspect the area to assess if a permit will be issued.
- The Domestic Burning Permit is required within the town limits of Murray Bridge and is only available during the non-fire danger season.
- Schedule 9 and 10 permits are required during the Fire Danger Season.

Burning in the Open outside Fire Danger Season and Total Fire Ban Days
The Environmental Protection Air Quality Policy 2016 applies within The Rural City of Murray Bridge.
Any person within the designated township of the Rural City of Murray Bridge must make an application to Burn in the Open which will then be assessed against the Legislation – this applies to the use of incinerators and open fires for waste disposal on domestic premises.
