Work begins in preparation for Italian Monument
Work has started on preparing the Linear Park site for the installation of the monument, which is being developed in partnership between Council and the Murray Bridge and Districts Italian Community Inc (MBDIAI).
Thanks to the vision and incredible generosity of the MBDIAI, who are fully-funding the monument, it will become a visual reminder of the enduring legacy and significant contributions made by Italian migrants to the Murraylands.
MBDIAI members and their contractors have completed early site works, including laying a concrete pad for the statue.
The statue itself, hand crafted in Italy by craftsmen from the finest Carrara marble, was recently shipped to Australia and is now receiving its final touches, before it is brought to Murray Bridge for installation.
Surrounding pathways will be laid around the monument and lighting fixtures installed to light the monument at night.
The Linear Park site was chosen for the monument due to its historical significance to the Italian community, with close proximity to their founding market gardens, family homes and the site of the first Murray Bridge Italian Club.
Italian migrants were instrumental in contributing to the Murraylands’ economic and social growth through market gardening, logistics, construction, sharing of culture, and enduring family connections.
Following the launch, the monument will be gifted to, and be under the care and control of Council.
Keep a lookout as the MBDIAI and their contractors bring this exciting project to life.
