Congratulations to the Murray Bridge Wellbeing Hub, The Haven and The Murray Bridge Community Centre for winning the 2024 Walking for Health award with Walking SA.

The team were recognised for the Walking Netball initiative, which successfully connected members of the community to play and participate in a modified walking version of the sport, irrespective of capacity, age or ability.

Walking SA has initiated annual awards to recognise sustained and outstanding contribution to walking at all levels throughout South Australia.

There was a fantastic level of engagement from the community, attracting a wide range of participants of all ages and backgrounds.

Community member Helen Smith made this exciting initiative possible by bringing this to the attention of the Wellbeing Hub.

The key elements of success were highlighted through some of the following feedback;

  • ‘It’s been a good opportunity to catch up with old netball friends’
  • ‘Such a laugh’
  • ‘Loved being able to play with my daughter’
  • ‘Even though I know it’s cold I still make sure that I come each week’
  • ‘That was so fun but so hard, I want a t-shirt saying that I survived walking netball!’
  • ‘When I use to go to the shops I would never see people I knew, now I will see people from walking netball and I will say hi’
  • ‘This was much better on my knees then normal netball but I am so glad to be back out on the court ’

You can find out more about how to join the Walking Netball program on the Rural City of Murray Bridge’s Wellbeing Hub page and the Murray Bridge Community Centre.

The Murray Bridge Wellbeing Hub is a joint project between the Rural City of Murray Bridge, The Murray Bridge Community Centre and Preventive Health SA.
