South Australia is taking the next steps to Replace the Waste, with new single-use plastics bans coming into effect from 1 September 2024.

From 1 September 2024, the following single-use plastic products will be banned from sale, supply and distribution in South Australia:

  • Plastic barrier bags (produce bag)
  • Thick supermarket or boutique-style plastic bags
  • Plastic food bag tags
  • Single-use plastic beverage containers and lids (including coffee cups)
  • Single-use plastic food containers and lids
  • EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) food/beverage containers
  • Plastic confetti and balloon sticks/ ties

These bans are part of South Australia's ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste, protect our environment and encourage the use of sustainable alternatives.

Single-use plastics often end up in our waterways and landfills, contributing to pollution and causing harm to wildlife.

We can make a significant difference in preserving our environment for future generations, by replacing these items with reusable or compostable options
