Rural Road Safety Month

September 2024 is Rural Road Safety Month. Council is supporting the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) in this national community-based road safety initiative. Designed to highlight the additional risks when driving on rural and remote roads across Australia.

Despite less than a third of Australia’s population residing outside major cities, deaths on rural roads accounted for almost two-thirds of the 2023 road toll.

All road users are encouraged to get involved to help make a significant reduction in road trauma.

Following a devastating surge in fatal crashes across Australian roads this year, ARSF has released new  statistics on the 2023 Road Toll:

  • 1,273 lives were lost on Australian roads in 2023 (a 7.9% increase, from 2022)
  • More than half the lives lost were not drivers ( a 65% increase in SA, from 2022)
  • 62% of fatalities occurred during the day
