Government levees along the Murray River are temporarily closed to the public.
The Department for Environment and Water is currently undertaking work to repair 20 Lower Murray Reclaimed Irrigation Area levees that were overtopped or breached, and subsequently damaged, during the 2022-23 River Murray flood.
Government levees will remain closed while works are in progress, with construction activities expected to continue until mid-2025. Levees will be progressively reopened as works are completed and safe access is determined.
Access to private levees is at the discretion of the landholder, however access is not permitted where construction activities are being undertaken.
Recreational activities are not permitted on the levees while they are closed, including:
- Walking and running
- cycling
- fishing
- driving vehicles
- mooring houseboats and other vessels.
Information about designated council houseboat mooring sites can be obtained from the relevant local council website.
