The Rural City of Murray Bridge is inviting the community to have their say on a draft Active Ageing Strategy, which aims to support people to age well, remain connected and continue participating in community life.

The draft Strategy provides a shared vision and framework to support people to live meaningful, healthy and fulfilling lives across Murray Bridge and its townships.

What is active ageing?

Active ageing is about more than physical activity. It is about having opportunities to stay connected, participate in community life, maintain independence, continue learning, share knowledge and experience, and contribute in ways that are meaningful to each person.

The draft Strategy recognises that everyone experiences ageing differently and that people should have opportunities to age in ways that reflect their needs, aspirations, culture and life circumstances.

It also recognises the significant contribution older people make to our families, workplaces, neighbourhoods and community through volunteering, mentoring, leadership, cultural knowledge and lived experience.

Shaping an age-friendly community

The draft Strategy builds on existing Council priorities, including the Community Wellbeing Strategy, Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, Reconciliation Action Plan and Volunteer Strategy.

It is also informed by the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Communities Framework and provides a pathway for considering age-friendly principles across Council planning, services, infrastructure, community development and advocacy.

Council wants to hear from the community about whether the proposed priorities reflect the current and future needs of people across Murray Bridge and its townships.

Targeted engagement with key stakeholders, service providers and community organisations will also take place alongside broader community consultation.

Come along to a community drop-in session

Community members are also invited to attend a drop-in session to learn more about the draft Strategy, ask questions and share their feedback with Council staff.

Date: Monday 26 October
Time: 11am – 12.30pm
