"Why is that tree blue?" This question sparks a conversation that can change everything.

Avoca Dell Blue Tree Project

Now standing in communities worldwide, Blue Trees are creating a global movement of mental health awareness through The Blue Tree Project.

They are a powerful symbol of hope, support and connection.

Murray Bridge will welcome its third Blue Tree at Avoca Dell, when Council, its partners and the community come together for a painting day to mark R U OK? Day on Thursday 11 September 2025, from 12-1pm.

Council offered its support for the project after being approached by community member, Suzanne Morris, who identified the dead tree, opposite the Avoca Dell Caravan Park, as an ideal spot for a blue tree.

Once painted, it will add to the 1,455 Blue Trees currently registered worldwide.

Council is proud to work with the Murray Bridge community and project partners – Murray Bridge Suicide Prevention Network, Silent Ripples, the Murray Bridge Wellbeing Hub, The Murray Bridge Community Centre, and the Mobilong Rotary Club.

Everyone is welcome to come and paint the tree, with all encouraged to wear something blue, yellow or both!

The Blue Tree Project was founded by farmer and advocate Kendall Whyte in 2019, after her brother Jayden lost his life to suicide in 2018. The movement was inspired by a light-hearted practical joke played by Jayden and his friend Tjarda to paint a dead tree blue on Jayden’s family farm in the West Australian Wheatbelt region. The blue tree, once a symbol of laughter, has now grown into a powerful symbol of hope, connection, and awareness.

R U OK? Day aims to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life.
