Council proudly welcomed 12 new Australians at a citizenship ceremony at the Council Chambers on Tuesday 17 September 2024, in celebration of Australian Citizenship Day.

Mayor Wayne Thorley led the proceedings, officially welcoming new citizens from eight different countries, including New Zealand, China, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, England, Scotland and Sri Lanka.

Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for all Australians, whether by birth or by choice, to celebrate their Australian citizenship and reflect on the meaning and importance of Australian citizenship and the responsibilities and privileges we have as citizens.

In 2024, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of Australian Citizenship. The first citizenship ceremony took place in Canberra in 1949. Since then, over 6 million people from more than 200 nations have chosen to make Australia their home.

Mayor Wayne Thorley expressed his excitement at the ceremony, stating, "Australia's strength lies in its people. Our people have made Australia what it is, building our nation into a vibrant, open and diverse society of which we can all be proud.

We wish our new citizens the best in this new stage in their lives.
