Busking permits are an approval for an itinerant musician, actor or street performer or group of the same (up to a maximum of 6 people) performing in a public place (in line with available conditions).

Eligibility

Anyone can apply for a busking permit.

Conditions

Permits may be obtained for 1-6 people.

Yearly permit – permission to busk for a 12 month period.

If under 12 years of age, be constantly supervised by a parent/guardian and only perform in daylight hours.

For a person under the age of 16 to apply for a busking permit they require written permission from a parent or guardian.

Permit holder(s) must:

Read and comply with all of the conditions of the busking licence and any other legislative requirement(s) (non-compliance may result in the permit being revoked and an infringement notice being issued).

Only perform between 9:00am and 6.00pm on the date(s) specified on the permit.

Display the permit in a prominent position so it can be seen at all times when performing.

Ensure that a minimum distance of 50 metres from any other busker or event/promotion is maintained. (to ensure a fair and reasonable spread of performers)

If under 12 years of age, be constantly supervised by a parent/guardian and only perform in daylight hours.

Permit holders must ensure that the performance does not obstruct pedestrian flow.

Be aware that any amplification or percussion must only be loud enough to be heard within 50 metres and not cause a nuisance to traders.

Be aware that non-compliance with permit conditions will result in the permit being revoked and an infringement notice may be issued.

Comply with the following restrictions as part of the performance (Failure to comply without the special permission of the Team Leader Approvals may result in the permit being revoked and an infringement notice being issued).

Buskers must not:

  • Perform without a valid permit
  • Use any sharp object or other dangerous instrument including knives, swords and chainsaws
  • Perform for any longer than 30 minutes in any one location (in consideration of retailers)
  • Perform in any one location more than twice in any one day
  • Use a stock whip
  • Light or use fire or any flammable liquid
  • Play bagpipes
  • Sell or display for sale any merchandise
  • Charge a specific fee for a performance
  • Cause damage to, or paint - draw on the footpath or floor surface or use any aerosol containers
  • Use a child or any other person not covered by the permit or use any animal in or as part of the performance
  • Advertise any product, service or sponsorship
  • Harangue, argue with, abuse or cause discomfort to the public
  • Make physical contact with the public unless it is to apply face paint, a henna tattoo, or similar type of act/performance (including fortune telling etc.)
  • Busk in doorways particularly in Bridge Street
  • Use any of the street furniture for the purpose of the performance
  • Leave any equipment in a position that may create a hazard to the public

Locations

Busking must not impede pedestrian access.

Busking is permitted in the areas shown on the Busking Map.

How to Apply

To apply for a busking permit the following information must be supplied:

  • Personal details such as name, address, phone and/or email
  • 1 x Photo identification (e.g.. Drivers licence, passport, student id card, etc.)

A busking application form may be downloaded here  or obtained in person at the front counter of the Local Government Centre at 2 Seventh Street Murray Bridge.

Cost

The fees for busking are applied as stated in Council's current Fees & Charges Schedule

The fee must be paid at the front counter of the Local Government Centre at the time of permit approval.
