Wellington

Wellington

The area around Wellington is home to the Ngarrindjeri people who have lived with and farmed the plants, fish and animals that have featured in the river system for many thousands of years.

Following Captain Charles Sturt's historic trip down the river in 1830, much of the area along the Murray River was colonized.

By 1839 Wellington had become one of the most important settlements on the Murray River being the only point where traffic could cross the Murray when the ferry was established.
