Murray Park Trail

This beautiful park is home to many native plants, birds and animals that were once common in the region. They provided resources for the Ngarrindjeri people, who have been living here for thousands of years.

Murray Park has a shallow topsoil over limestone. Only plants adapted for the conditions live here. The plants have in turn attracted particular birds and animals. As you follow the walk, find out about the different plants, birds and animals on the signs. You will also see pale limestone rocks which provided useful building materials for early settlers.

The first cemetery

The first cemetery in Murray Bridge was located in the centre of this park. The first of eighteen burials was on 17 February 1885. Thirteen of these burials were children under the age of five, reflecting the high child mortality at the time. The shallow soil and thick layer of limestone on this site made it almost impossible to dig graves, and the cemetery was closed on 16 August 1886.

The Loop Trail

The loop trail takes you around the circumference of the park, with detours to see the cemetery.
