Australian Citizenship

221

The Rural City of Murray Bridge hosts Citizenship Ceremonies for persons achieving citizenship status approved by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Becoming an Australian citizen

Becoming an Australian citizen is something to celebrate. Citizenship ceremonies mark this important milestone in the lives of new citizens; it is where you make the Australian citizenship pledge and the final step in the journey to becoming an Australian.

The citizenship ceremony is usually held within 6 months of hearing about your approval.

You will become an Australian citizen once you have attended your ceremony and made the pledge.

How to start the citizenship process

To start the process of becoming an Australian citizen, contact the Department of Home Affairs.

Once your application has been processed and you receive your approval letter you then go on a wait list to be invited to a ceremony by the Department of Home Affairs.  This can take up to 6 months.

You will be invited by either Council or the Department of Home Affairs to attend your ceremony about 4 weeks before the event. If you have an inquiries regarding the date of your ceremony and where you are on the wait list the contact number for the Department of Home Affairs is 131 880.

The invitation shows the date, time and place of the ceremony. You cannot choose where and when to attend your ceremony. Local councils usually arrange the ceremonies.

If you are unable to attend your ceremony you must contact the Department immediately so they can provide you with an alternative date. Please note that we are unable to reschedule your ceremony. If you do not advise the Department that you cannot attend and you miss your ceremony, we are unable to provide you with your certificate and it must be returned to the Department. If you require a replacement certificate, you will need to contact the Department on 131 880.
