Swimming Centre Watch Around WaterWatch Around Water is an education and public awareness raising program that addresses the supervision of young children at public swimming pools. The program helps aquatic staff promote safe supervision practices and provide a safe venue for the community to participate in sport and recreation.

The program was developed by the aquatics industry and is based on the premise that it’s unrealistic to expect lifeguards to provide the constant and close supervision required for each young child at the pool at all times. Although lifeguards should always be present, the responsibility of supervision of children is shared between lifeguards and parents or responsible carers.

Watch Around Water — Life Saving SA

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
* Prevent drowning deaths and drowning related injuries at public swimming pools
* Promote active parental supervision
* Assist aquatic staff to promote safe supervision practices
* Provide a safe aquatic venue for the community

KEY PRINCIPLES
1 Children under 5 years must be constantly supervised and remain within arm’s reach
2 Children under 10 years must be accompanied into the facility and constantly supervised by a parent/guardian
3 Children under 13 years must be accompanied into the Centre by a responsible person 16 years or over and supervised at all times.
4 Unsupervised children (of any age) will be removed from the water if the lifeguard is concerned for their safety.

As a Watch around Water facility it is important to remember to always keep focus on your child and not on a phone or other distraction.
“Your child, your focus.”

Royal Life Saving Australia National Guidelines for Public Pools

* The Guidelines for Safe Pool Operation include specific adult supervision ratios for children that will affect families attending the pool for leisure or structured lessons (see graphic below)
* The ratios apply to other pools run by councils, motels, caravan parks etc
* Children must have the required level of adult supervision so they can gain entry to the pool
* Arrangements will be reviewed and updated as COVID-19 restrictions permit
* Adults are not permitted to leave children under 10 at the pool unsupervised
